How to Check a Telegram Channel Before Buying an Ad: SCAM and FAKE Labels, Ratings and Payment Safety
Before you pay a Telegram channel for a post: what Telegram's official SCAM and FAKE labels mean, how the verified badge and the Stars profile rating help, why escrowed Suggested Posts beat prepayment, and a checklist for spotting risky sellers.

Buying a post in a Telegram channel is still mostly a deal between two strangers. The advertiser pays up front, the admin promises a post, and the only proof is a screenshot. Telegram now gives both sides better tools — official labels, a public rating and escrow — but you have to know where to look.
1. Look for Telegram's own labels#
Telegram marks some accounts, channels and groups with official labels. In the API they are defined like this (Telegram API):
| Label | What Telegram says |
|---|---|
| SCAM | "This channel/supergroup is probably a scam." |
| FAKE | "Reported by many users as a fake or scam: be careful when interacting with it." |
| Verified | The channel is verified by Telegram. |
A SCAM or FAKE label on the channel — or on the admin account you are talking to — is a stop sign. The labels can also be removed later; scammers.tg tracks accounts carrying them and their flag history.
2. Check the person, not just the channel#
- Is the contact really the channel's? Since June 2025 channels can have their own direct messages. If the channel has them switched on, write there instead of to a "manager" found elsewhere — messages go to the channel itself (Telegram blog). The link
t.me/<channel>?directopens them (Telegram API). - Profile rating. Since July 2025 profiles show a rating based on successful Telegram Stars transactions — buying gifts, paid messages, funding Suggested Posts raise it; refunds lower it. Telegram describes it as a way for channel owners to see who can be trusted for Suggested Posts (Telegram blog). It works both ways: a buyer with a rating is a safer counterparty for an admin too.
3. Prefer escrow to prepayment#
If the channel accepts Suggested Posts, use them: you set the price in Stars or Gram, Telegram charges you on approval and releases the money to the channel only after the post has been live for 24 hours. If it is deleted earlier, you get a full refund automatically (Telegram blog). That removes the classic "paid, no post" scam.
4. Sanity-check the numbers#
Inflated audiences are the other common trick. Compare subscribers with average views on recent posts — a channel with a huge subscriber count and very low views is a warning. Public statistics services, including telegramstats.net, show members and average views side by side.
Red flags#
- The "admin" contacts you first from a personal account and asks for prepayment in crypto.
- The account or channel carries a SCAM or FAKE label.
- The admin refuses Suggested Posts although the channel has direct messages on.
- Views are tiny compared with subscribers, or jump right before the deal.
- A "manager" asks you to top up through a site that is not fragment.com or to share a seed phrase.
If you advertise to Russian users#
Paid posts there are advertising under local law: they need marking with an erid, and channels with 10,000+ subscribers must be registered with the regulator; advertisers can be fined for placing ads in unregistered channels (eLama).
FAQ#
Who assigns the SCAM and FAKE labels? Telegram. SCAM means the channel is probably a scam; FAKE means many users reported it as fake or scam.
Does a verified badge guarantee a safe deal? It confirms the channel's identity, not the terms of a particular deal. Use escrow anyway.
What if the channel doesn't accept Suggested Posts? Pay in stages, agree on dates and proof in writing, and avoid paying through links or wallets the admin sends you.
